Data Basin - Shared, Social Conservation Data

by Howard Silverman

I saw an exciting presentation of Data Basin at a recent ecoinformatics conference. Data Basin is managed by the Conservation Biology Institute, in partnership with Rhiza Labs.

Features of Data Basin that look to be quite impressive are: semi-curated access to data sets on conservation topics, individual profiles, a reputation system for raking the data sets, and the ability to save and share analysis snapshots.

Here is their introduction:

Data Basin is an innovative web tool that connects users with conservation datasets, tool, and expertise. Individuals and organization can explore and download a vast library of conservation datasets, upload their own data, and produce customized maps and charts (coming soon) that can be easily shared.

Data Basin allows scientists, practitioners, and citizens to overcome existing challenges by making reliable datasets, tools, and information about experts centrally available and easy to use. Data Basin magnifies the value of existing conservation investments by empowering people with data, information, and a mechanism to connect the conservation community in an exciting new way.

For a look at the architecture behind Data Basin, take a look at this presentation by Josh Knaur of Rhiza.
