COP15

by P&P

COP15 is the 15th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC treaty has been ratified by 192 countries, and the COP15 conference will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 7-18, 2009.

Subsequent and additional to the UNFCCC treaty is the Kyoto Protocol, which establishes legally binding commitments for the reduction of greenhouse gases among Annex I (industrialized) nations and the European Union as a whole. The Kyoto Protocol entered into force in 2005, for the five-year period 2008-2012. COP15 offers an important opportunity for negotiation of a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.
